William fought in both world wars acheiving the rank of Rear Admiral and was awarded a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in 1950.  He was also an engineer and filed with the US patent office with a design for Reciprocating Internal Combustion Engines and Turbo Compressors utilizing Exhaust Gases from such Engines in  1951.
